Course Requirements & Grading

  • Attendance  : 10%
  • Class Facilitation: 10%
  • Reading and Annotations: 10%
  • Weekly Blog Posts & Comments (15): 30%
  • Midterm “Short Guide”: 15%
  • Final Manifesto Project 20%
  • Lightening Talk Presentation: 5%

Attendance: 10%

  • 1 point per week based on attendance and attitude in class

In-class Facilitation 10%

  • One week during the semester you and another student will introduce the course topic, review the homework, and help me guide our discussion

Reading and Annotations 10%

  • Reading, annotation are the backbone of your grade. You cannot do well on the posts if you do not read closely and annotate to take notes, highlight important quotes, and ask questions.
  • You should aim to annotate at least twice on every reading. If you want to annotate more- go for it!
  • Annotations should highlight important points, raise questions or comments and attempt to begin a conversation about the reading.

Weekly Blog Posts (15): 30%

  • Short check-in posts should be 250+ words
  • How to Post (Link to Directions)
  • Posts are graded 0-2
    • 0 = Not or inadequately completed
    • 1 = Fair, mostly completed
    • 2 = Good, fully completed

Midterm “Short Guide”: 15%

  • Produce a “Short Guide to TOPIC/PLATFORM/TOOL OF YOUR CHOICE”
    • Examples: Cryptocurrencies, XBOX, Pintrest, Occulus VR, etc.
  • Guides will include
    • Historical overview of development
    • Economic/Financial Background
    • Profile of Stakeholders & Users
    • Common Uses of Platform/Tool/Topic
    • Strengths & Weaknesses

Final Manifesto Project 20%

  • Pick New Media Entity and provide an overview
  • Outline an issue caused or made worse by the new media entity
  • Identify the “public” people involved in and tasked with solving this issue
  • Propose a solution and steps towards achieving the solution
  • We will develop a shared rubric for this project
  • Manifestos will be due after your lightening talk on exam day

Lightening Talk Presentation: 5%

  • During the final exam period we will workshop our Manifesto Ideas
  • You will give a SHORT 2-MINUTE lightening talk about your manifesto ideas and receive feedback from your peers
